Apify vs PhantomBuster for Instagram hashtag data
Published
Almost every Apify vs PhantomBuster comparison online answers a question about platforms: which one is the better scraping product in general. That is the wrong question if you already know what you want, and what you want is the posts sitting under one Instagram hashtag. On that single job the two platforms are not really competing — they are built for different buyers, priced on different meters, and one of them will be obviously wrong for you within about two minutes of reading the prices. This page compares them on that job only.
The short verdict. If Instagram hashtags are one task inside a wider prospecting workflow — you also pull LinkedIn profiles, enrich leads, and run outreach sequences — PhantomBuster is the right platform and nothing here should talk you out of it; its subscription buys a whole catalogue and a scheduler, and paying per row for one piece of that would cost you more in switching than it saves. If you want hashtag data and nothing else, Apify is the cheaper and lighter answer, because you pay per result on a marketplace rather than renting a catalogue. The interesting case is the third one: if you poll the same hashtag repeatedly and only want what is new, neither platform's default answer does that well, and the rest of this page explains why.
All figures below were read from Apify's and PhantomBuster's own pages and public API as of September 2026. Prices and platform limits change; check their pages before you decide anything on them. Where the two columns differ in strength, this page says so: the Apify rows come from the actor's own input schema, the PhantomBuster rows from its published pricing and documentation.
Apify vs PhantomBuster: what you are actually buying
The difference that decides everything else is the meter.
| Apify | PhantomBuster | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | a marketplace of scrapers built by many vendors | one vendor's catalogue of pre-built automations |
| Priced on | platform plan plus per-result or per-usage charges set by each scraper | a subscription with automation slots and an execution-time budget |
| Entry price | $0 on the free plan, with $5 of included usage | 14-day free trial, then $69/month |
| Built for | developers and data teams who want the rows | marketers and sales teams running outreach |
| Its own positioning | "comprehensive web data extraction capabilities across any website" | "purpose-built for LinkedIn automation and lead enrichment" |
That second row is the whole comparison in one line. PhantomBuster's own comparison page describes its focus as sales prospecting — "integrated automations for professional networking and relationship building, plus social data extraction" — and names Apify's as web data extraction across any website. Both descriptions are fair, and they tell you which side of the line your job sits on before you look at a single price.
What Apify costs
Apify charges for the platform and, separately, for whatever scraper you run on it. The plans, as of September 2026:
| Plan | Monthly price | Included usage | Compute unit rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $5 | $0.20 / CU |
| Starter | $19 | $19 | $0.20 / CU |
| Scale | $199 | $199 | $0.16 / CU |
| Business | $999 | $999 | $0.13 / CU |
A compute unit is 1 GB of RAM running for one hour. Usage above the included allowance is billed as you go. Most Instagram scrapers on the store, though, are priced per result rather than per compute unit — the platform calls this pay-per-event — so for hashtag work the plan mostly decides your per-result rate, not your bill.
What PhantomBuster costs
PhantomBuster charges one subscription for the whole catalogue. From its own pricing, as of September 2026:
| Plan | Monthly | Billed annually |
|---|---|---|
| Free trial | 14 days | — |
| Start | $69 | $56/month |
| Grow | $159 | $128/month |
| Scale | $439 | $352/month |
| Enterprise | custom | custom |
The number to hold on to is $69: that is the floor for using PhantomBuster at all, in a month where you pulled one hashtag or a hundred. It is excellent value across a dozen automations and poor value across one.
The same job, priced on both
Say you watch one hashtag and want 500 recent posts a day — roughly 15,000 rows a month.
On PhantomBuster, that is the Start plan at $69/month, or $56/month if you commit to a year. The hashtag export is one automation slot; the rest of the plan is there whether you use it or not.
On Apify, you pay the store price of whichever scraper you pick. Apify's own Instagram Hashtag Scraper is priced per result on a sliding scale by plan tier:
| Apify plan tier | Price per result | 15,000 rows |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0.0026 | $39.00 |
| Bronze | $0.0023 | $34.50 |
| Silver | $0.0021 | $31.50 |
| Gold | $0.0019 | $28.50 |
| Platinum | $0.0017 | $25.50 |
There is one tier cheaper again above Platinum. The actor's store page shows the price that applies to your own plan, and it is the figure to check before you decide on cost.
So at that volume Apify is cheaper than PhantomBuster, and it gets cheaper as you grow rather than stepping up a plan. At very low volume the gap is enormous: a thousand rows a month costs $2.60 on Apify's free plan and $69 on PhantomBuster.
But price is not the reason most people move. Read the actor's own reviews on its store page before you commit to it — they are public, they are specific, and on a tool this widely used there are enough of them to see a pattern.
What each one actually returns
This is where the single-job comparison stops being about money.
| Apify's Instagram Hashtag Scraper | PhantomBuster's hashtag export | This site's actor | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inputs | hashtags or keywords, content type, results limit | hashtags, a post count, an Instagram session | hashtag, exact limit, date window, session cookie |
| Reels as well as posts | yes | separate automations | no, posts only |
| Several hashtags per run | yes | yes, from a spreadsheet | no, one per run |
| Date filter | no — not in its schema | none documented | yes, newer-than stops the run |
| Needs an Instagram login | no | yes | yes |
| Pricing meter | per result | subscription | per delivered post |
| Price | $0.0026 per result on the free plan, less on higher tiers | from $69/month | $0.0005 per delivered post, every plan |
Two rows there matter more than the rest.
Apify's own scraper needs no login, and that is a genuine advantage over both of the others. Its input schema has exactly four fields — hashtags or keywords, a keyword-search toggle, the content type, and a results limit — and none of them is a cookie. If handing an Instagram session to a tool is a problem for you, whether for account safety or because you have no account to spare, that decides it and you can stop reading comparisons here.
Neither platform's hashtag tool gives you a date window. Apify's is definite — its input schema has four fields and not one of them is a date. PhantomBuster's export does not document one either. Either way you ask for a number of posts, and you get the newest that many. For a one-off sample that is fine. For a job you run every morning it means each run starts at the top of the feed again and re-reads yesterday's posts, and you pay for them again on a per-result meter, or burn execution time on them on a subscription. The deduplication happens in your spreadsheet, after you have already been billed.
Where this site's actor fits, and where it does not
This site publishes a third option on the Apify store, and it exists for exactly that last paragraph: it charges $0.0005 per delivered post — flat, on every Apify plan — and it takes a real date window, so a daily run can say only posts newer than yesterday and stop walking the feed when it reaches one. Rows past your limit, duplicates across pages, posts outside your date window and empty runs are not delivered and not charged.
It is the narrowest of the three and you should know what it refuses to do. One hashtag per run. Posts, not reels, comments or profiles. And it needs a session cookie from an Instagram account you control — which, on the table above, is the one place Apify's own scraper is plainly better. The limits page lists everything it does not do, and the output fields show exactly which columns come back.
If you are comparing on price alone, the Apify pricing article works a month of daily pulls through the plan tiers in full. If you are leaving PhantomBuster specifically, the alternatives page covers what its Phantom does that a per-result actor does not.
How to choose, in one pass
- Do you run other automations? If yes — LinkedIn, outreach, enrichment — stay on PhantomBuster. The subscription is already paying for itself and nothing on the Apify side replaces the catalogue.
- Can you supply an Instagram session? If not, use Apify's own Instagram Hashtag Scraper. No cookie, no account risk, and it handles reels and keyword search as well.
- Are you polling the same hashtag on a schedule? If yes, the date filter is worth more than the per-row price, because without one you pay repeatedly for posts you already have.
- Try it before you migrate anything. Check the tag is worth polling with the free hashtag checker, which reads the live recent tab without starting a run or costing anything. Then set
resultsLimitto 10 — half a cent — and put the columns beside what your current tool returns. Getting started shows where the two cookie values live in your browser.
Nothing here is a reason to rush a migration. PhantomBuster is a good product for the job it was built for, Apify's scraper is the most flexible of the three and the only one that needs no login, and a per-delivered-post actor with a date filter only wins when you are polling. Pick on the job, not on the platform.
