Apify alternatives for Instagram hashtag data

Published

If you are searching for an Apify alternative for Instagram hashtag data, the first thing worth separating is what you are actually unhappy with. Apify is two things sold together: a platform you pay for by compute, storage and proxy, and a store of 70,000-plus scrapers built by other people, each with its own price. A bill that surprised you almost always came from the second one. Leaving the platform fixes a problem you may not have.

This page prices the genuine alternatives — Bright Data, Octoparse and PhantomBuster — using figures read from their own pricing pages as of September 2026, and says who should pick which. It also states its own conflict of interest up front, because it would be dishonest not to.

Disclosure: the tool this site publishes is itself an Apify actor. If your requirement is "nothing on Apify", this site is not your answer, and the three alternatives below are the honest list. Skip to the alternatives and ignore the last section.

What Apify actually costs, as of September 2026

Apify's plan is prepaid credit, not a fee on top of your usage. Its own wording on the Starter plan is "$19 to spend in Apify Store or on your own Actors" — so the $19 buys $19 of scraping rather than the right to spend more money.

PlanMonthlyPrepaid usage includedCompute unitMax concurrent runsActor RAM
Free$0$5$0.2 / CU516 GB
Starter$19$19$0.2 / CU3264 GB
Scale$199$199$0.16 / CU128256 GB
Business$999$999$0.13 / CU256512 GB

Annual billing is 10% off. Residential proxy runs $8 per GB on Free and Starter, $7.50 on Scale and $7 on Business, and datacenter IPs are included in small numbers before they are charged per IP.

The line that catches people is the one below the table. Apify states plainly that "unused usage credits are not rolled over to the next billing cycle, and they expire at the end of the billing cycle". If your hashtag job is small and bursty, you are buying a monthly allowance you will not finish, and that is a subscription in everything but name.

The second layer is the actor's own price, and Apify documents two models: pay per event, where the developer charges a fixed price for events they define such as returning a single result, and pay per usage, where the developer charges nothing and you pay only the platform usage the run consumed. Two actors doing the same job can therefore differ by an order of magnitude, and nothing about the platform price tells you which you picked.

Who should stay on Apify

Most people, honestly. Stay if any of these describe you:

The three real alternatives

These are the tools someone leaving Apify for Instagram data actually lands on. They price in three incompatible units, which is why headline comparison misleads.

Bright Data — the closest like-for-like

Bright Data is the alternative that replaces Apify most directly for this job: you send it Instagram URLs and it returns structured records, with no scraper to choose and no compute unit to reason about. Its Instagram Scraper API page states the terms as "Pay as you go — $1.5 /1K record", with a record defined on the page as "one extracted item, shown as a row in the table".

The free tier is the strongest offer anywhere on this page:

"Every new Bright Data account automatically includes 5,000 free credits per month (approximately $7.50 in value) — no credit card required, no promo code, no commitment." — brightdata.com's Instagram scraper page, September 2026

Two details to plan around rather than discover. Unused free credits do not roll over, and when they are exhausted the behaviour depends on your balance: with pre-deposited funds usage continues at standard pay-as-you-go rates, and with no funds "requests will return an error until you add funds or until your credits renew on the 1st of the following month". A scheduled job that quietly starts erroring on the 20th of the month is a failure mode worth alerting on.

Pick Bright Data if your volume is real, you will not paste an Instagram session cookie, and you would rather buy records than operate a scraper. For a job under 5,000 records a month it is free, and nothing on this page beats free.

Octoparse — the wrong unit for one hashtag

Octoparse sells a builder you aim at any website, priced as a subscription for the builder: free forever with 10 tasks and 50,000 rows of monthly export, Standard from $69 per month, Professional $249 per month, both billed annually — its page states "You save 16% by choosing annual billing over monthly billing on any paid Octoparse plan". Paid plans carry a 5-day money-back window.

The subscription is not the whole meter, and for a platform that blocks aggressively the add-ons are not optional: residential proxies $3 per GB, CAPTCHA solving $1 to $1.5 per thousand, pay-per-result templates $0.001 to $3 per thousand results, plus Crawler Setup from $399 and a managed Data Service from $599.

The structural problem is that a subscription has no idea what a post is. A run that finds nothing new costs the same share of your month as a run that returns four hundred posts, so polling a quiet hashtag hourly is pure loss. Octoparse is the right answer when you scrape ten different sites and the builder is what you are buying. It is a poor swap for one Instagram hashtag. There is a fuller breakdown in the Octoparse alternatives article.

PhantomBuster — different job, same neighbourhood

PhantomBuster's published plans as of September 2026 are Starter $56 per month ($672 billed annually), Grow $128 ($1,536 annually) and Scale $352 ($4,224 annually), with a free trial whose exports are limited to 10 rows. Annual billing saves 20%. What you buy is automation slots and execution time — 20, 80 and 300 hours per month respectively — not rows.

Two things make it a poor Apify replacement for hashtag data specifically. You are billed for minutes, so a slow page or a retry costs you the same as delivered data, and PhantomBuster runs on your own Instagram session, which is the same security question this site's tool raises. Its centre of gravity is outbound: email credits, URL finding and lead workflows. If that is the job, it is excellent and Apify was never the right comparison. See the PhantomBuster alternatives article for the hashtag-shaped read.

If the problem is the actor, not the platform

This is the case the search term hides, and it is the common one. Three questions tell you which situation you are in:

  1. Open your Apify billing and look at where the money went. If most of it is an actor's own per-result charge rather than compute units, storage and proxy, the platform is not what is expensive.
  2. Did a run ignore the limit you set? A result limit that is advisory rather than exact is an actor decision, not a platform behaviour.
  3. Did you pay for rows you did not want? Old posts pulled because there was no date filter, or the same post charged twice in one run, are both the actor's design.

If you answered yes to any of those, swapping actors costs you one input form and swapping platforms costs you an integration. This site's Instagram Hashtag Scraper is an Apify actor built against exactly those three complaints, at $0.0005 per delivered post on every Apify plan — no subscription of its own, no per-run fee and no per-hashtag fee.

Three specifics decide whether it fits, and the first one disqualifies some readers outright:

You can check a hashtag's shape before spending anything with the free hashtag checker.

How to switch, in the order that saves the most

  1. Read the bill before you read any vendor page. Platform usage and actor charges are separate lines. Whichever is larger is the thing to replace.
  2. Check the free tiers against your actual monthly volume. Under 5,000 records, Bright Data is free and this whole page is academic.
  3. Price a run that finds nothing. On a per-query or per-minute meter an empty poll still costs; on a per-delivered-row meter it does not. If you poll on a schedule, this is the biggest lever you have.
  4. Keep the export shape. Whatever was dropping CSVs or feeding your warehouse is code you now own — that is usually the real cost of switching, not the subscription.
  5. Run both for one cycle. Compare the row counts, not the invoices. A cheaper tool that returns fewer posts is not cheaper.

The verdict

If you want off the platform, Bright Data is the alternative to beat — no login, 5,000 free records a month, a per-record rate you can plan against, and no scraper to choose. Octoparse earns its subscription only when you scrape many different sites, and PhantomBuster is aimed at outbound work rather than at hashtag data.

But check the bill first. Apify's platform pricing is prepaid credit at competitive compute rates, and the expensive part of an Instagram hashtag job is usually a decision inside the actor you happened to pick — an advisory limit, a missing date filter, a duplicate charged twice. Those are fixed by changing one line in an input form, and no amount of platform migration fixes them.
